December 2019 Hub: In Service: The Column of the ADRP PresidentMichal Shaw Does fear stop you from trying new things? Do you hesitate to advocate for yourself, apply for a new job, reach out and meet new people? If we had a guarantee that things would turn out well, we would likely be more inclined to go ahead with a new experience. Alas, the fear of the unknown too often holds us back. To have caution when trying new experiences is normal, and even wise. However, if fear always wins and we never experience new things, then we stop growing. We get stuck in old familiar ways of being and doing things. We were born to be creative. Have the courage to be yourself and experiment with your creativity. And what better time to try new things and set new goals than a new year! As I focus on my goals for the upcoming year and my One Word, I’m inspired by Suzanne Bellanger to think about my strengths, what makes me strong, and to focus on these things. In her article, Suzanne reminds us to not only spend time developing our strengths, but to purge the clutter. For me, this is the box of files collecting dust under my desk. The box that survived the move to our new office space nearly two years ago, which I was convinced contained files too important to shred. Research shows that those who intentionally concentrate on their strengths (and avoid the clutter that easily distracts us) are more engaged, productive, happier and healthier. Whether you’re looking to improve yourself or you want to empower your team, focus on your strengths and natural creativity. Don’t be afraid to try new things. During this holiday season, I’m immensely grateful for the support of family, friends and colleagues who have challenged me and inspired me to dream and be courageous in new ways. I am also incredibly thankful for the ADRP membership, staff and amazing volunteers who use their creativity and strengths to make ADRP an incredible network and resource to donor relations professionals around the world. Thank you for all that you do, and warmest wishes for a bright new year! Michal Back to the December 2019 Hub |
